COQUECOL has been operating in Colombia for more than a quarter of a century, if we add COQUECOL’s years of work with those of COLCARBÓN, which was founded in 1991. However, COQUECOL as we know it today, was born in 2008 with the arrival of the Gerdau Group in Colombia.
Thus, COQUECOL was part of the Brazilian giant’s global expansion program. Following the purchase of DIACO, Colombia’s main steel producer, COQUECOL became a generator of raw materials for the Gerdau group.
From 2008 to 2011, the company began to transform the business towards the export of crude coal. Between 2012 and 2016, the company experienced a significant increase in its exports, transporting an average of 700,000 tons of coal each year to Brazil.
Since its inception, COQUECOL has exported to international markets in Latin America, Europe, Asia and the United States, producing its raw materials from its Cundinamarca, Boyacá and Norte de Santander plants and exporting them from the ports of La Guajira, Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Buenaventura.
COQUECOL is very valuable for Colombia, now more than ever, as a Colombian investment group has bought shares of the company. COQUECOL is part of a sector that contributes more than 1 billion dollars a year to the country through the export of 5 million tons of metallurgical coal; a very relevant figure for Colombia.
